Animals tips : Safety Features on GPS Trackers for Pets

GPS Pet Trackers have been gaining in popularity for a while now. Pet owners the country over have realized the efficacy of these devices in tracking and locating missing animals and demand for the same has multiplied.

GPS dog collars use the latest in satellite technology to monitor a pets movements around the clock. Safety and security leaders such as Securus have entered this market with products like the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator and its value priced counterpart – the SpotLITE. Thanks to these GPS-enabled devices, decreasing the number of missing pets can soon become a reality.

Apart from tracking down a pet when he goes missing, GPS dog collars are also effective tools in keeping your pet safe and secure. These products offer a preventive facet along with a proactive one if an animal actually goes missing. For example, the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator allows you to specify certain areas and zones as “SafeSpots.” These safe spots or zones are areas that are considered safe and familiar for your dog to roam within and could include your home, or the local park. What the SpotLight then does is notify you by email, text or via the Internet if your pet has moved out of any of these areas. Since this is done in real time, you will be able to take the necessary steps to prevent your dog from getting lost as soon as possible. By taking these precautions, you are in fact preventing your dog from going missing and keeping him safe without intruding on his daily routine.

When choosing a GPS dog collar, look out for models with extra safety features such as reflective surfaces or LED lights. The SpotLight has a powerful LED beacon that will make your dog visible in the dark. An added advantage is that this beacon can be activated from your home computer or even from your phone.

Keeping your pet safe in the dark is another worry for most pet owners and in this way a GPS Pet Collar can help matters. Also included is a Rescue button. In case your dog still manages to slip away and is found by someone else, all they have to do is press the Rescue button and you will be informed of your pets location and how to get there.

Securus has teamed up with the American Kennel Clubs Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) to provide pet owners access to a 24/7 helpline and recovery service. Along with this is a unique AKC CAR ID and tag that adds to your pets safety and wellbeing. The product website – SpotlightGPS is developing into the definitive site for pet owners. Thanks to its alliance with PetWave, the site provides a vast library of information about pet safety and health. Last week, Securus announced the release of the latest BlackBerry application for SpotLight and SpotLITE GPS. Securus’ GPS pet protection systems are the only products that combine GPS tracking technology with 24/7 recovery services provided by American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery, paving the way home for the millions of pets that go missing each year. The SpotLITE GPS locator was released in September, and the new iPhone application seamlessly integrates SpotLITE tracking and location information for the convenience of our customers.

Like Version 1.0 of the application, Version 2.0 gives pet owners real-time location updates and a location history. In addition, tracking mode provides turn-by-turn directions if the dog is on the run. Finding Lost Dogs, The Next New Thing

SpotLight GPS Pet LocatorLooks like GPS tracking systems for finding lost dogs have made a leap–we’ve seen the Garmin unit, the Zoombak, reviewed here a couple of months ago, and RoamEO—all products that came out of the technology used to find stolen cars. You can locate your wayward wanderer for anywhere from $100 to $500 with these. But I just read about the next new thing in this market niche, claiming to be streets ahead of the competition. It does have a couple of smart features, and, even better, it’s not at the top end of the price range. If it works as well as users are reporting, it should be a real winner, even if you’re a low-tech type.

Securus Inc. released a 24/7/365 tracking recovery service: “Spotlight” the only GPS pet locator system that partners with AKC Companion Animal Recovery, notifies owners via cell phone, smart phone, or via a real time aerial map on the computer if the dog has left a pre-programmed safe area (backyard, dog park, even by your side for a walk).

The locater gives you location, direction and speed the dog is traveling. You can also call a special number and the team will guide you, turn by turn, to your dog. “Spotlight” has another feature: A bright beacon that shines from up to 100 yards away. There is also a button on the collar that anyone who finds the dog can press and it will text the owner and the AKC CAR specialist.

Not only will you know where your dog is at all times, but should you be separated either by a car accident or some other unforeseen event, you will be able to find him again. This device has the potential to reduce the number of lost dogs in pounds, keeping them out of the animal control system altogether. If you have an “escape artist” for a dog, this is your ticket to reducing the panic that sets in on those occasions, and the price is not astronomical.

Now available from $199 at SpotlightGPS, AKCcar, the price goes up to $249 in the Fall. There’s a choice of monthly service packages, $7.99 for 25 escapes per year, $14.00 for 100 escapes, and $19.00 for the unlimited package.

Apparently you need to make sure you turn off the alert process before your walks or that may count as usage! Read the directions carefully. Even if you turn off the alerts, the tracker will remain on should you get separated from your dog. iPhone, Windows, and Blackberry mobile apps will be available soon. And, remember, any of your low-tech friends or family can just pick up the phone and get those turn by turn directions from a real person.

Chris Newton, CEO of Securus Inc., talks about Spotlight GPS with host Peggy Smedley in this audio clip.

Effective Tips on Training Your Dog

By Lewis Sheats and Chris Newton

Much like you teach your children how to behave and what to do in certain situations, it is not that much different for your pet either. A young puppy will always be full of frisky energy and over enthusiasm that could get him into trouble. From climbing up on to beds, chewing your shoes, barking unnecessarily, messing up the room or even straying off from home, training your dog is essential in handling such behavioral problems. A well-trained pet will soon be able to understand basic instructions and respond immediately when called – all imperative when raising a happy healthy pet.

It is never too late to start training your dog but experts do say that the ideal time to start imbibing good behavior patterns is between six to eight weeks of age. As always the earlier you start, the more effective the teaching. When you decide to begin training your pet, also keep in mind his temperament. Some breeds are fussier than others while some might be more boisterous and unmanageable. Read up on your particular breed in order to understand why your dog behaves in a particular fashion and what to expect. This will allow you to be realistic when it comes to training your pet.

Any teaching process involves the attention of the person or in this case the animal. If your dog is not paying attention to you, no matter how many times you teach him something or ask for something, it will all be in vain. The first trick to training your dog is to catch his attention with a small treat. Once he is listening to you, you can start on simple commands such as “Sit,” “Down,” “Roll Over,” and “Stay.” Once these are mastered, you could move on to more complex directions such as “Fetch.” Repetition is the key to success in training your pet but it is also necessary to limit your training time to fifteen minutes a day initially. The place should be distraction free and quiet so that your dog’s attention stays firmly fixed on you. As your pet masters the commands one by one, treat him with his favorite food, a pet or a hug or even a walk. Reward and positive reinforcement is the key to motivating your pet. When he earns a treat or receives love, he will want to repeat his actions and perform a particular command. If he roams away or resists any instructions, persevere nonetheless. You will need a whole load of patience when training your pet and giving up mid-way accomplishes nothing – for the both of you. Needless to say, until he starts obeying your commands, you cannot give him what he desires. Consistency is therefore the key to the effective training of your dog.

One of the biggest problems with pet dogs is their love of exploring and roaming. Unsupervised roaming is dangerous to your dog’s life and safety and should be tackled immediately. In addition to this, a roaming dog is also a public nuisance, so make sure that he is supervised at all times. Restricting your dog’s movements is in effect fighting his natural instincts. He is genuinely unable to resist the urge to chase cats, follow other dogs and explore new smells and sounds. In order to keep him safe at home, you will need to provide your pet with alternate forms of entertainment. Pack the day with daily exercise, training sessions, playtime, and food time and your dog will lose the urge to run off and look elsewhere. A dog stuck at home is also a bored and restless dog, so ensure that he gets the chance to interact with other dogs at a local park or in the neighborhood as well. If your dog is well exercised and happy, chances are that he will stay at home contentedly.

As an added safety measure, make your home escape-proof by making sure your fence is tall and sturdy enough, gates are locked and that there is an adequate play area for him to work out all his excess energy. If his space and surroundings make him feel secure and relaxed, the odds of him running away or straying are less. Another excellent way of keeping track of your dog at all times is to invest in a dog tracking collar such as the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator. Using satellite signals and Google Map technology, the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator can help you track your dog’s movements around the clock. You can create specified safe zones such as your yard, or the local dog park. If and when he moves out of these safe spots, you will be notified by text of email. The SpotLight comes fitted with an LED beacon for greater visibility at night and is durable and water-resistant. By monitoring your pet’s movements, you are assured if his safety and security at all times. Keeping track of your pet is now easier than ever before with the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator.

10 Tips to Recover your lost Pet

1. Search your neighborhood – Many times, dogs and cats may run away but stay in the familiar zone of their own neighborhood. Walk around calling out your pet’s names loudly in case they are around but scared or confused.

2. Ask around – It might help to actually approach your neighbors and ask if they have seen your pet lately. The more people who know your missing pet is missing, the greater the chances of it being found.

3. Keep an updated picture of your pet – You will need this to use on posters or advertisements announcing your pet’s disappearance. The photo should be clear and upclose to get the best results.

4. Advertise in your local paper and online – Place an ad in the local paper and include a thorough description of your pet and how you can be contacted best if anyone spots your dog or cat. Many people now turn to the Internet to help find their missing pets. You can post an ad on a number of sites such as craiglist.com and petfinder.com. The Internet is a great resource to increase your chances of having your pet returned.

5. Visit local shelters and pet rescue centers – Physically visit all pet shelters within a 60-mile radius. If your dog has not returned in a few days continue to visit the shelters routinely. Keep in mind your dog might be dirty and matted and now be unrecognizable from his or her photo, so a personal identification is the safest option. Shelters also rarely keep an animal for more than 72 hours, which again illustrates the importance of time.

6. Post ‘missing’ posters – Tack these up everywhere in a 10-mile radius. Put them up in grocery stores, near stoplights, community centers, vets, and even pet stores. Include a photo, your telephone number and if possible, the promise of a reward for your returned cat or dog.

7. Check with the local police or highway patrol – As unbearable as it is to consider, you need to check with the local authorities to find out if any accidents have occurred involving a pet.

8. Be mindful of pet recovery scams – Never volunteer extra information to a stranger who calls claiming information about your pet’s whereabouts. Ask him to describe your pet in detail and be sure the identification marks are not just the ones you have stated on posters and in ads, in order to make sure the caller is legit. Never believe anyone who asks for money to be wired for the return of your missing pet.

9. Think about IDs – Implanted microchips have been around for a while now; unfortunately these microchips are usually limited to a range of about half a mile and are fairly ineffective. With microchips, implantation has to be done by a trained professional and many are averse to putting their pets through this trauma.

10. Prevent your dog from going missing by investing in a GPS Pet Tracking Collar – Fit your dog with A-GPS dog collar – a pre-programmed transmitter that informs the owner when his pet has strayed from designated safety zones. Through the GPS system you will be alerted if your animal has moved away from these areas, and it updates you of the dog’s current location allowing for quicker retrieval.

SpotLight is the next stair in providing recovery services for your pets. It offers total peace of mind in knowing that your dog is always being monitored, no matter where you are. You can now relax knowing that you are always connected to your pet and their location. Created and developed in coalition with the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) team to reduce the number of lost dogs, buying a SpotLight Pet Locator includes an exclusive AKC CAR collar tag with unique ID number, which includes Lifetime enrollment in AKC CAR’s Recovery Service as well. The rescue button on the device connects you with your lost dog and a trained recovery team as part of the service. Thanks to the 24/7 AKC CAR helpline, there is always someone there to watch and help if your dog is missing.

Canine Tracking Systems – General Information You Need to Know

Author: Chris Newton and Lewis Sheats

Your pet dog can be your companion, your playmate, your assistant, your bodyguard, and your best friend! As an owner, there is nothing you would not do for your beloved pet and of prime importance is keeping him safe. As technology has developed, there are several new ways of keeping a track of your animal and making sure that he is safe at all times. Canine tracking systems such as GPS pet collars are now available and offer the most effective way to monitor your dog\’s activities throughout the day. These tracking systems can be used on the job (while hunting or search and rescue) or even on a daily basis where you need to know the location of your dog and how to find him.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are now being applied to pet tracking systems by way of two main components – the dog collar with the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter is worn attached to the collar at all times and transmits information to the owner via the receiver or through email or text alerts. It really is that simple but there are several factors to take into consideration before buying such a tracking system for your pet. Some of these include:

Coverage: From how far away can the signal on the collar be detected? When choosing a GPS dog collar, ask about the range of the system. Some may only pick up signals within a one-mile radius while others might be effective only in flat, unobstructed terrain.

Size: Collars available in the market are more suited for dogs weighing thirty pounds and over. Check for comfort and safety before making a purchase. Remember, your pet has to wear the collar at all times so ensure that the choice is a practical one.

Price: There are collars that charge a monthly fee for the services provided and there are those that have a one-time fee. These are normally more high-end and offer a host of other services as well. It might be prudent to work out the long-term costs before making any decision. The budget GPS collars may not have the option that certain more expensive models do of being connected to tracking specialists and support staff who will assist you in searching for your lost pet. High-end models may also inform you when the collar\’s batteries are running low and need to be recharged. This is especially important as low batteries could result in a low signal and create problems in tracking and locating your missing pet.

Safe Zones: Most providers will allow you to create specific virtual safe zones where your pet can roam freely without being alerted. For example, your backyard or the local park can all be created as virtual safe spots. If, however, you dog wanders away from these zones you will alerted. Check with the service provider about the possibility of setting up multi safe zones and how you will be alerted if an emergency arises.

GPS Pet Tracking – An Overview

Ever since we have been keeping pets, we have created ways and means of tracking them and making sure they are safe. From simple leashes and ID collars in the past to the more sophisticated micro-chipping and GPS systems of today, pet tracking continues to develop with the aim to keep our beloved pets secure. In terms of ease of use and efficiency, GPS Pet Trackers have no competition. A GPS device can be fitted on to most dog collars or harnesses. They operate by transmitting satellite signals that will pinpoint your dog’s exact location and send you the information regarding his whereabouts through text messages, email notification or even online mapping. Now being produced in smaller sizes thus making them more portable, most dogs can be fitted with a GPS Pet Tracking Collar. As the demand increases, these products are available along with a range of services. The good ones are all sturdy and water-resistant, equipped with long-lasting and rechargeable batteries and are cost-effective as well.

A simple search online will produce a staggering amount of related products. So, if you are in the market for a GPS Pet Collar for your dog, there are a few things you should know before making a purchase:

Usage: You have to first determine where you are most likely to be using your GPS Pet Tracker. Is your dog a hunter – would you need a device that would be more effective in the outdoors and in rugged terrain? Is your dog prone to escaping or does he love to roam over large areas of land? Is the phone signal where you live and in the nearby areas strong with respect to your GPS service provider? Does your dog go out a lot at night? Maybe a product with a LED light would make it easier to spot him in the dark. These are just some points to consider before narrowing your search.

Budget: Your budget is a big factor in deciding which GPS Pet Tracker to choose. There are a wide variety of styles and products available in the market ranging from basic models that just give you the location of your pet to more sophisticated models that offer even a seven-day history of your dog’s movements. Look around and weigh the pros and cons of each model as you might realize that the slightly more expensive ones could come along with a host of useful add-ons. Some products charge a monthly fee while others are a one-time expense. Ask about warranties and battery life as well.

Add-ons: GPS Pet Trackers can vary hugely when it comes to the additional services offered. Some models provide the facility to pre-determine safe zones or spots wherein your dog can roam freely. If he leaves these areas you will be notified immediately. This is found in one of the most efficient GPS dog tracking collars today – the SpotLight GPS Pet Locator. The SpotLight GPS Pet Locator is attached to your dog’s collar and is water-resistant, sturdy and comes with rechargeable batteries. SpotLight is also the only GPS Pet Locator that offers round the clock and year round recovery service through its alliance with the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR).
